Painting of Woman
Feminist Art "Burning Woman"
“Burning Woman” was inspired by my personal pursuit of social and economic equality in the contemporary business world. As a full time artist and female business owner, this art piece expresses a personal and collective story of the modern woman. She faces exhaustion, manipulation and ultimately perseverance in statistically male dominated career fields. The two figures body parts are contorted as they try to ‘fit the mold’ yet connected in a confiding gesture of unity.
The objects I included in the painting’s background and woven into the woman’s hair are cogs and gears. They are commonly found inside of watches and symbolize time and progress. The dollar bills flying through air and falling from the woman’s eyes express the financial pressures and the pursuit of success.
The title of the painting “Burning Women” raises awareness about the increasing incidence of a condition called “Burnout” among women. Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism and detachment and feelings of ineffectiveness. As we celebrate more women entering positions once dominated by men, we are also facing a constant balancing act. In addition to the high demands to excel and compete in the workplace, women are also primarily maintaining the expectations to manage their home lives, maintain physical appearances and strive toward an image of perfection. My painting creates a dialogue about the changing the paradigm of women’s roles at home and in the workplace.
The vibrant color palette I choose to use in this contemporary oil paintings was inspired by advertising campaigns that target young adult audiences. By drawing reference to these popping colors I seek to grab the attention of the next generation in order to make a greater impact despite the fast paced culture of our nation.
This painting is available as the original painting.
