"Millennial Woman"
My contemporary oil painting Millennial Woman was inspired by my experience as a feminist woman in the 21st century. My portrait of a strong female empowers the coming generations of women to rise and unite in the pursuit of transformation and redefining gender stereotypes. Her hair is entangled with social media hashtags. Technology has allowed the modern activism to break geographical and social barriers. My hope is for my art to inspire the coming generations of marginalized women to feel empowered to rise up and actively participate in building a better future for humankind.
“Millennial Woman” depicts the female portrait’s powerful eyes watching over humankind and standing bravely in the face of opposition. Her head is adorned with angels and birds across her crown to represent her freedom and perseverance. Her exposed explosive heart represents her fearlessness to express herself as an individual. The second figure in the composition is depicted biting the sun to represent the future generations hunger for progress.
The vibrant color palette I choose to use in this contemporary oil paintings was inspired by advertising campaigns that target young adult audiences. By drawing reference to these popping colors I seek to grab the attention of the next generation in order to make a greater impact despite the fast paced culture of our nation.

Dana Richardson (b. 1985) is an award winning artist, painter, and filmmaker born and raised in California. Currently, she lives and works in Santa Cruz, California.
